Temple of the Beastmen [GDW]

"Temple of the Beastmen" was designed by Lester W. Smith and Frank Chadwick. Thegame was published Game Designers' Workshop (GDW) in 1989. This board game is a death maze exploration on 19th century Mars set in the universe of "Space: 1889" RPG. Players choose one of ten adventurers to lead an expedition into the mines of the sinister Martian king Gnaashriik to rescue prisoners and collect loot.

　"Temple of the Beastmen"は、Sci-Fi RPG Space: 1889 を舞台としたマルチ・プレーヤーズ・ボードゲームである。プレーヤーは10人の冒険者から一人を選び、火星のGnaashriik鉱山に入いり、財宝を得て脱出するゲームである。ゲームは四角形のタイルを繋げてダンジョンを造り、冒険者が探検し、タイトルの獣人(Beastman)が妨害者として登場し、冒険者達を攻撃する。

　Sky Galleons of Marsでも書いたが、Space: 1889 はホビージャパンの翻訳RPGラインナップに入っていなかったため、日本国内での知名度は低く、また流通数もかなり少ない。さらに19世紀の技術水準で宇宙旅行が可能となった Space: 1889世界(今ではスチーム パンクと呼ばれる世界観)は、1990年代初頭の日本では全く馴染のない世界であった。このためTemple of the Beastmenは日本国内では全く見かけないゲームである。

　Fig. 1は私の所持している"Temple of the Beastmen"である。Janet Aulisioがカバーアートを描いている。このゲームは未プレイなので多くは語れないが、四角形のタイルをつなげるマップとキャラクター・カードが、このゲームが Space: 1889版のテズメイズ (Deathmaze [SPI])的なゲームであることを示唆している。"Board Game Geek"の評価6.0は悪くはないが、今となってはコレクターアイテムだと思う。
