2. GDW Series 120

　Dash's Collection特別編として、私が蒐集した GDW (Game Designers' Workshop)の小箱版ゲームを紹介する。

　私の知る範囲で、GDWが9 x 6 x 1.5 inchの小箱で出版したゲームは、"Classic" TRAVELLER (1st ~ 2nd edtion)、STRIKER、SNAPSHOTとSeries 120である。TRAVELLERはSci-Fi RPGルール集(3冊)であり、STRIKERはミニチュア・ゲーム用ルール(3冊)のため、私の蒐集に含めていない。

　Series 120は、 1977年から1981年にかけてGDWから出版された、プレイ時間120分以下、1/2 inchカウンター120個以下、17 x 22 inchのマップシートと16ページの英文ルール(表紙、裏表紙含む)をベースにデザインされた入門用シミュレーション・ゲーム群である。最初の8作品はziplock版で出版され、1979年からは9 x 6 x 1.5 inchの小箱版としてリリースされた。Sci-Fi 作品は1983年に11 x 9 x 1 inchのカラーボックス版として再版された。

　この時期のGDWは、意欲的に実験的なシミュレーション・ゲームを開発している。その影響を強く受けたSeries 120は、テーマとして古代～中世が3作品、近代が3作品、WW2が4作品、Sci-Fiが3作品出版された。他にも"Isandlwana", "The Battle of Marathon 490BC", "March on the Rhine (1944)"と"March on the Ruhr (1944)"の4作品が計画されていた[1, 2]。

　1982年にホビージャパンがSeries 120の小箱版に日本語訳を付けて輸入販売していたので、古いゲーマーは見覚えがあると思う。1989~1990年には、フランスのExcelsior Publicationsが"Casus Belli magazine"の付録として3作品を出版している。また2001~2009年には、国際通信社がコマンドマガジン日本版とRPGamer日本版の付録として10作品を出版している。2020年と2021年には、アステロイド(Asteroid日本版)とダークネビュラ(Dark Nebula日本版)がボックス版として再版されている。更にCompass Games LCCが「GDWの名作『Series 120』の復刻、全3作が『WWII Campaigns: 1940, 1941, and 1942』の1ボックスに！」として出版計画を進めている。

　Series 120は、簡単なルール、短時間プレイに優れ、A2のマップサイズと21世紀向きのゲーム群である。ただし1970年代のゲーム・デザイン技術による実験的なシミュレーションのため、ゲームとしての評価は玉石混淆である。

SNAPSHOTは小箱で出版されたが、Product lineはSeries 120となっていない。しかし、SNAPSHOTはSeries 120のコンセプトに添ってデザインされているので、私のGDW小箱版ゲーム蒐集に加えている。当時のGDWが小箱で出版したゲームは、他にTRAVELLER (1977: The first printing of the box set)とSTRIKER (1981)がある。どちらもルール・ブック3冊だけのセットなので、私の蒐集に含めていない。

Snapshot: Although it is not marked as one of the Series 120 games, it is similar enough to the other games (in spirit, as well as appearance) to merit inclusion here.
