Cloudships & Gunboats [GDW]

"Cloudships & Gunboats" was designed by Frank A. Chadwick. The game was publishedby Game Designers' Workshop (GDW) in 1989. This game was intended to bridge the gap between the boardgame Sky Galleons of Mars and the role-playing game Space 1889. The relationship between this game and the Sky Galleon of Mars is the same as that of the Mayday and the Snapshot. This game is not a completed game. Players must have Space: 1889 or Sky Galleons of Mars in order to use it.

　"Cloudships & Gunboats"は、Sky Galleons of Marsでは抽象化されていた乗り込み戦闘を紙製のミニチュア駒とデッキプランを使って対地球人、対火星人戦闘をシミュレーションするゲーム拡張である。Cloudships & Gunboatsは、ホビージャパンの翻訳RPGのラインナップに入っていなかったSpace: 1889 のボードゲームであるSky Galleons of Marsのゲーム拡張のため、日本国内では全く見かけないゲームである。

　Cloudships & Gunboats は1989年にGDWがボックス版を出版した。Heliograph社が2000年に第2版として製本出版した"Sky Gallons of Mars" にCloudships & Gunboatsのルール、造船ルール、チャートが付属していた。Ulisses Spiele社が2008年に販売したPDF版にはカラーのデッキプランも含まれている。

　"Board Game Geek"のDescriptionには、"This allows for players to add characters from the RPG, but role-playing is not required and as a boardgame Cloudships & Gunboats can stand alone. (プレイヤーはRPGのキャラクターを追加することができるが、ロールプレイングは必要なく、ボードゲームとしてCloudships & Gunboatsは単独で成立する)"と書いてあったので、GDW Sci-Fiゲーム蒐集に加えるためにGDWボックス版の"Cloudships & Gunboats"を購入した。Fig. 1に購入した Cloudships & Gunboatsを示す。私が入手したGDWボックス版は、乗り込み戦闘ルールと飛空船の設計ルール、カラーのデッキプラン6枚、プラスチック・スタンド(60個)と33キャラクターのカラーミニチュアのシートが2セット入っていた。そしてボックスには、"This game is not a completed game. Players must have Space: 1889 or Sky Galleons of Mars in order to use it. (このゲームは完成したゲームではありません。このゲームを使用するには、Space: 1889またはSky Galleons of Marsを持っている必要があります)" と書かれた金色のシールが貼ってあり、スタンド・アロンでプレイできないゲーム拡張であると明示されている。

The box cover art is cluttered, but the colored deck plans and colored paper miniatures add to the atmosphere beautifully.

　Cloudships & Gunboatsはミニチュア・ゲーマーのChadwickがデザインしたゲームらしく、マスケット銃と刀剣を使うミニチュア・ゲームをプレイしているように感じられそうなゲームである。Chadwick が Starship & LasergunよりもSword and Musketの世界観が好きと感じさせられるゲームである。BGGでの評価は6.7、古いSci-Fiゲーム Sky Gallons of Marsの拡張ゲームなので評価数は27と少ないが、高い評価である。Snapshotのようにデッキプラン上での個人戦闘を楽しめそうなだけに、付属シナリオが無く、Sky Galleons of Marsをヘビーにプレイしない限り使用することの無いゲーム拡張なのは残念である。
